Things to know
Reunion shares the same time zone as Johannesburg, four hours ahead of GMT and two hours ahead of SA time. South African passport holders can enjoy visa-free stays of up to 90 days; however, ensure your passport is valid before travel.
With a tropical climate moderated by the nearby Indian Ocean, Reunion enjoys a coastal temperature range of 18°C to 32°C, with each area having its unique microclimate. The island remains sunny year-round, with summer from November to April being hot and humid, averaging 30°C. Winter from May to October is relatively cooler, averaging 20°C.
Reunion operates on 220/240 volts of electricity, using square-pin plugs. You will also find SA 2-pin plugs in all hotels.
As a French Department, Reunion’s official currency is the EURO. South African Rands can be exchanged at banks or hotels. ATMs allowing foreign bank cardholders to withdraw EUROs are also available.
For those planning to drive, keep in mind that driving is on the right side of the road in Reunion, and an International Driver’s License is necessary for renting a vehicle.
Regarding gratuities, where a service charge isn’t included in restaurant bills, a 10% tip is considered adequate.
French is the official language in Reunion, but English is also spoken. Reunion Creole, though unofficial, is widely spoken.

Car seats for children are not compatible with these vehicles so it is not recommended to book a SIC transfer for young children. A private transfer may be more cost-effective.
